What is an area chart?

An area chart is a line chart with the region between the line and the axis filled with color. It emphasizes the magnitude of values over time or categories and is especially useful for showing trends and cumulative data. Multiple series appear as layered or stacked filled areas.

How do I enter data?

Each column in the data table is one data series. Each row is one data point. The first column contains your X-axis labels or values. Click + Column to add more series. Click Calculate Chart to render instantly.

What is the difference between overlapping and stacked areas?

When multiple series share the same X values, overlapping areas show each series independently (useful for comparison). Stacked areas add each series on top of the previous one, showing the cumulative total — ideal for part-to-whole analysis over time.

Numeric vs Categorical X-Axis

Use the X-Axis Type selector to control how the X axis is interpreted. Numeric (value) treats X values as numbers, spacing points by their actual numeric distance — ideal for time series with uneven intervals. Categorical (text) spaces all points evenly regardless of value — ideal for months, names, or other labels.

How do I customize the chart?

Use the Options section to adjust colors, title, axis labels, legend position, grid lines, and font size. Changes apply instantly when you click Calculate Chart.

How do I download my area chart?

Click the Download PNG button below the chart to save it as an image. Use your browser's print function (Ctrl+P / Cmd+P) to print or export as PDF.
